DIY Stair Railing
Everyone’s been asking me how I did my stairway project and here it is…
Amazon. No for real. I ordered the supplies off of Amazon and completed the renovation in a weekend! These are the items I used, I also bought a wooden pole from Lowe’s and bolted it into our bottom step and wall.
- Steel DN Mate 10 Sets Cable Railing Kit
- Steel DN Mate Hydraulic Crimping Tool
- Steel DN Mate 220 feet T316 1/8 Stainless Steel Cable
I spaced out the steel cable according to Maryland code, if you are not from Maryland please look up your state’s requirement for handrails. For me, hand rails need to be 34-38 inches above the tip of the stair tred. The hand rail needs to be between 1.5 and 4.5 inches from the wall. The rails need to “not fit a 4 inch sphere between them” so that equates to roughly 3.5 inches or less between rails.
I measured out how tall my pole was and how tall the wall opening was at the shorted point and ended up needing 9 cable rails for my staircase. This project turned out beautifully and I would definitely recommend this project to friends looking for a subtle but safe railing design.
